What are the steps of an ADHD diagnosis?

1. Clinical Assessment: A psychiatrist conducts a thorough clinical assessment, gathering information from the individual. This involves discussions about the
individual's behaviour, history, and any relevant symptoms.

2. Behavioural Observations: Conduct virtual behavioural observations by discussing real-life situations and challenges to observe how the individual responds. This can provide additional insights into ADHD-related behaviours.

3. Diagnostic Criteria: Criteria include specific patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, considering their duration and impact on daily life.

4. Rule Out Other Conditions: The clinician assesses whether the observed symptoms are not better explained by other mental health conditions, medical issues, or external factors.

5. Feedback and Recommendations: Provide feedback on the assessment findings, discuss the diagnosis, and offer recommendations on possible interventions

How does getting an ADHD diagnosis help?

1. Understanding Challenges: A diagnosis provides clarity on why specific attention and impulse control challenges may be occurring.

2. Tailored Interventions: With a diagnosis, professionals can recommend personalised strategies and interventions to address your unique needs and strengths.

3. Reducing Stigma: Acknowledging and understanding ADHD through a diagnosis can help diminish stigma, encouraging empathy from peers, family, educators, and/or employers.
